Sabine's Gull
in the Avon Valley
On the morning of
18th August, a Sabine's Gull was seen heading inland from Fisherman's
Bank. An hour or so later, it was relocated on the pig fields just east
of Sopley. Then, on 19th, it was seen in pig fields west of the Cat
and Fiddle, but then moved to the Avon Causeway area, where it became
more settled and allowed the local photographers to catch up with it.
The bird was aged as a first-summer, presumably a plumage that is quite
rare to experience in the UK, with most records being adults or juveniles
occuring after westerly gales.
