Outdoor Meetings

The following events are scheduled, but some details may change. Please check this page in the run-up to events or confirm by emailing the organiser of each meeting.

Most meetings will last 2-3 hours, but please email the organiser if you require more exact timings.

The events are free to members, but there will be a £2.00 fee for non-members.

Saturday 25th January
CHOG's Hengistbury Head Big Bird Watch
In support of the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch, we have decided to have our first CHOG Outdoor Meeting of 2020 on the same weekend.  We will meet outside the Hengistbury Head Visitor Center at 9:00am for a gentle walk around the head looking at the winter bird life, aiming to conclude around 11:00am. New Forest – Hawfinch Roost

An afternoon stroll in the New Forest for winter birds, with the possibility of seeing Hawfinch going to roost. Meet at 3:00pm at Blackwater Arboretum car park – SU267047 – until dusk. Please email

Sunday 8th March
Durlston Country Park, Swanage
A morning walk for breeding auks and possibly the earliest migrants. Meet 08:30am at Durlston CP car park. Duration 2.5 hours. Some inclines.

New Forest Dawn Chorus
Meet Millyford Bridge car park - SU267078 - at 08:30am. Duration 2.5 hours. Walk of 2.5 miles maximum. Some slight inclines. Please email Nick Whitehouse if you plan to attend.

Portland Bill
Spring arrivals and passage sea birds. Meet Portland Bill lighthouse car park 08:30am.  Seawatch and walk. Duration approximately 3 hours, concluding lunchtime. Some inclines.  Optional early afternoon extension possible to include Lodmoor RSPB reserve and sites nearby. Please email Nick Whitehouse if you plan to attend.

Sunday 21st June - CANCELLED
New Forest
A morning walk for birds, butterflies and odonata. Meet Shatterford car park at 08:45am for a gentle walk of 3 - 4 km over 2.5 hours. Weather permitting, we will then drive the short distance to Pig Bush for static observations, with the option to conclude the session with a picnic (BYO).

Burton Common for Nightjars
An evening foray for Nightjars and possibly Woodcock. Meet  at 08:30pm in the small car park at SZ190959. Option to conclude the evening with a social drink in a nearby pub.

Car Sharing
Several members have asked about car sharing on outdoor meetings. Where possible we will be pleased to arrange this for a limited number of places on each occasion. Please contact Nick Whitehouse well in advance of each meeting, so that numbers and pick up locations can be organised. Otherwise the RV will be as indicated on the website.
