A conference by the Dorset Bird Club and the BTO on November 16th.

You have may have heard about the joint conference that Dorset Bird Club are delivering in collaboration with the British Trust for Ornithology. If not, please read on.

The last conference in 2018 focused on the successes achieved on individual Dorset sites and projects. Those who attended will recall that it was well attended and hugely enjoyable. In the intervening years the conservation family has become more ambitious. We are now thinking and acting at landscape scale and recognising the need to engage and inspire all of our diverse communities. The 2024 conference aims to celebrate the progress that is being made already. It is encouraging in itself that our long list of potential topics was far too long for a single day. We had to make some tough choices. We hope our programme has struck the right balance and that our goal to present a range of perspectives is achieved.

We will hear about White-tailed Eagles, the work to help our Swifts turn around their worrying decline, big landscape projects around the River Allen, Wild Woodbury, Purbeck National Nature Reserve and the creation of a huge new wetland at Arne Moors.  We will also consider our role as community volunteers and supporters, what can we do and what is happening to inspire the next generation.

The news and social media can sometimes overwhelm with the struggles that nature is enduring. Hopefully this event will remind us that there is hope and that we are fortunate in Dorset to be witnessing some truly inspiring and ground breaking events that will help nature (and us) to flourish.
