Placement of buoys around Stanpit Bight

  • Placement of buoys around Stanpit Bight – to show watercraft users the boundary of where it is recommended to use watercraft in the Harbour. When watercraft enter areas of the Harbour that are most used by birds, they cause disturbance. When birds are disturbed, they waste valuable energy while searching for different feeding areas, or alternative places to roost. To try and improve the situation, CHOG consulted with BCP Council and Bournemouth Water (via South West Lakes Trust), and agreement was reached to source 33 new yellow buoys, plus associated chain, shackles and weights. On 23rd March 2023, the new advisory buoys were positioned as a cordon across the entrances to Stanpit Bight and Barn Bight. In conjunction with the information on the Harbour signage, it is hoped that this initiative will considerably reduce the level of disturbance to wildlife in these two sensitive areas of the Harbour.
