Mission

Christchurch Harbour Ornithological Group is dedicated to the study and restoration of nature, birds and all other wildlife in Christchurch Harbour and adjacent areas. The group will achieve this through recording, informing, educating and engaging with relevant organisations, policy makers and individuals.

Objective 1: Recording

To record, through observation and ringing, the birds and other wildlife of Christchurch Harbour and its adjacent areas. 

Outline Strategies:

• Field observations of wildlife
• Ringing – to support and increase ringing activity
• Liaison – maintain relationships and information exchange with other recording and scientific organisations 

Objective 2: Promotion of Wildlife 

To engage with the local community and relevant stakeholders to increase awareness of wildlife.

Outline Strategies:

• To build membership, which is key, as greater membership gives greater ‘voice’ in conservation and restoration matters
• To continue to produce and improve the annual report, ‘The Birds of Christchurch Harbour’
• Maintain digital media channels in terms of daily updates, features, information and news, in order to increase the number of visitors
• Indoor Events – continue to offer and publicise winter indoor meetings
• Outdoor Events – continue to offer and publicise field events

Objective 3: Restoration of Nature

To participate in, and offer advice on, nature and wildlife restoration activities and projects.

Outline Strategies: 

• Advising and liaising with landowners, outside organisations and individuals on nature restoration/conservation activities, issues and projects to achieve their environmental targets
• Acting as a point of consultation and an opinion-former on matters affecting local area nature restoration
• Using existing funds and seeking additional funding to drive nature restoration projects across the local area
